Stamping for Texture

Hello all, Alison (butterfly) here with some textured tags for you today.

It won't have escaped your notice that I'm pretty obsessed with the new Flourish Background stamp.  I've used it on journalling pages and jars already, and now I've been experimenting with using it to create texture in different ways, and here are two of the tags which arrived as a result.

There's so much gilding and shimmer going on that it was hard to get a photo of them together that does them both justice at the same time - either one was in shadow, or the other was catching too much light - hopefully you'll get the idea from the close-ups as we go!

The texture on the blue/gold tag was created with gesso.  I applied a generous coating of heavy gesso to the stamp using Cut'n'Dry foam and pressed it down firmly onto the tag.  As well as the relief stamping of the flourish itself, you get lots of additional textural interest as you peel the rubber away (like when you press two gesso'd or painted tags together and peel them apart) - lots of lovely organic ripple patterns.

Then I spritzed away with a combination of Distress Sprays and Perfect Pearl Mists and a few other sparkly sprays.

The colours settled nicely around the flourish textures, but I wanted to highlight them further so I used gilding waxes to zhuzh them up a little.

I love the golden gleam in the sunlight.

The texture on the coppery green tag has a slightly chunkier look.  I put a layer of texture paste onto the tag and pressed the Flourish Background onto it, just as I did with the gesso - though I don't seem to have a picture of this one "naked".  The texture paste obviously gets you a lot more dimensional bang for your buck!

I started with Dabbers and Distress Paints, including metallics, to get a good covering over the paste, and then added some spritzes of shimmer sprays.

Since I was leaning more to the greens than the blues on this tag, I then found myself reaching for coppery gilding waxes to highlight the textures.

Having created these two backgrounds, I really didn't want to cover them up very much!  I don't often reach for flowers - though for some reason I do have a whole box of paper flowers in my stash! - but that seemed to be the way to go with these tags.

They started out fairly innocuously in various colours... so I got busy with the Distress Sprays again.  I wanted them to look as if they were emerging out of the tags, so I spritzed them to co-ordinate with the respective colour palettes.

The blue-green ones got a spritz of Tarnished Brass to give a hint of a metallic look to fit with the gilded texture.

The flowers for the coppery green tag went through the same process with slightly different colours, and their metallic spray was the Antique Bronze - a warmer shade.

I liked the gilded look, so I emphasised the metallic shimmer even more by adding some gold embossing powder to the edges of the rose flower petals, large and small.  And I used copper embossing powder to add the extra gilding to the tips of the green petals.

It may have been slightly crazy to reach for the kraft card to create my word panels... kraft with all that gilding?!  But I really like the contrast.

The "with thanks" wording comes from Katy Leitch's Leaves set, and it's embossed in gold for one tag and in copper for the other.

It needed a bit more of the rustic earthiness to balance the shimmer, so I mounted the tags onto kraft card with padded tape, edging everything with Archival ink to give little more definition.

And some simple twine at the top completes the look - continuing the contrast between baroque gilded texture and rustic earthiness.

So, I hope you like them - a more gilded look than normal for me.  I think I've been influenced by Dee's fabulous work here!  And with all those flowers these would fit right in to the Flora and Fauna challenge theme here this month.  I hope you'll come and join in.  Remember, we do have to see some stamping, but it doesn't have to be with Artistic Stamper stamps (though if you do use them you get a double entry into the prize draw!!).  Hope to see you there.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, and I'll see you soon.

Journey of the Butterflies by Dee

Hi everyone! I hope you are all enjoying the summer.
Today I have a tag for you.

I put grunge paste through a Tim Holtz cargo stencil to spell Fly.
Once dry I painted the tag with Fresco Finish Paints in the
following colours Inky Pool, South Pacific,
Beach Hut, Ice blue, Hey pesto &
Guacamole.

Once dry I stamped the flowers from Encyclopaedia Botanica down both sides
in black archival and highlighted areas with pumpkin soup and ice blue.
The newspaper print from the stamp I stamped with snowflake
down the right hand side at the bottom of the tag.

To the left hand side I stamped the squiggle line from the borders plate
in chipped sapphire and gold embossed it. On a separate piece of card I
coloured it with distress inks in wild honey and faded jeans
I then stamped the flowers from the botanica plate,
and the butterflies from the insects and

I triple embossed the clocks of the Tick Tock plate and cut them out.
I used a small clock face to finish this off.

Once I had cut out the butterflies and flowers and highlight areas I
embellished the centres with sequins and beads.
Next I sprayed the butterflies with perfect pearls in Blue Patina,
Cappuccino and Heirloom gold. The wings were then
 highlighted with glossy accents.

Small beads were applied to make up the bodies of the butterflies along with

The bottom was finished off with a Tim Holtz die cut painted in gold leaf.

That's all for today I hope you have all enjoyed this project .
Please feel free to leave me comments
Happy stamping!
Dee x

Can I interest you in...

Hello all, Alison (butterfly) here with a mischievous little trio of ATCs... each of them attempting to entice you into a purchase you didn't even know you wanted!  I love these Artistic Stamper Steampunk stamps - they're like a little touch of time-travel, which regulars at Words and Pictures will know is something I yearn for.

There's the frankly malevolent-looking Phineas Pinchbeck, offering up his clocks to the satirically appropriate clients.

Master Squaretoe's Continuous Lunch sounds just the ticket for a queasy stomach (in the sense of you ending up with one, rather than it being a cure!).

And for the proud possessors of Luxuriant Moustaches, you won't want to be without Professor Barber's patent pomade.

The ATCs themselves are pretty simple, as I think these advertising images pretty much sell themselves.  I started with some ink on the craft mat - Pumice Stone, a hint of Vintage Photo and a few spritzes of Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls spray, which adds a lovely metallic touch.

I stamped the images in Jet Black Archival, and used a blending tool to add plenty more Vintage Photo.  I also stamped the Artistic Stamper Mini Polka Dot Background in Sepia Archival.

There are some Tim Holtz Remnant Rub flourishes around the edges, and a dusting of gesso for some extra highlighting and texture.

And finally each of our tempters got his own little bit of metal embellishing: a clock for the Professor...

... some gears to keep the digestive system churning for the duration of the Continuous Lunch...

... and Mr Pinchbeck clearly deserves to be labelled Unique with an Idea-ology Muse Token.

So that's my historical advertising trio for you today.  Hope you don't get tempted into anything unwise!  Mind you, there's still a week to join our In The Garden challenge and while you don't have to use Artistic Stamper stamps to join in, if you do you get two entries into the draw... so you might want to go stamp shopping!!  Thanks so much for stopping by, and I'll see you again soon.

Little altered plaque.

This months challenge theme is "Alter something". So I have altered one of the little "Papier Mache" Icon plaques. this is the smaller of the two.

Firstly I covered the little plaque with some card that had been embossed with a Sizzix embossing folder. I used the script from the Paris and script set which is the first set shown on this page HERE:

I coloured the embossed card with some paints and gilding wax. I stamped out the clock dial  (from the tick tock set) and the 'carpe diem' (from the journaling words 3) on to card i had stained with distress stains and perfect pearl mists. i then coated them with glossy accents. the rest was just glueing and assembling.the faucet knob and key are both from the "fixings" section of Tim Holtz supplies and can be found HERE.

The Secret Garden by Emma

Hello everyone!! For my second post of August, I thought it would be nice to hold onto Summer as long as we could...so, I decided to make this canvas featuring butterflies and flowers. As always, I've taken lots of pictures to show you all the details and I hope you love what I've created...
To begin with, I covered my 7" x 5" canvas with Tim Holtz Composer Tissue Wrap before adding the colour using Distress Paints. I chose Picked Raspberry, Salted Ocean, Bundled Sage and Antique Linen and once applied over the top of the wrap, I gave them a good spritz with water before allowing them to drip down the canvas. Once I was happy with the way it looked, I added Black Soot around the edges and applied Picket Fence onto one of the Swirls, Spots and Splats stamps from the A5 set, to add some texture.
Next, I added some small torn off strips of Sketchbook Tissue Tape onto the canvas and applied some drips of white acrylic paint, which completed the overall background to my piece.
To make the roses, I used Tim's Tattered Florals die from Sizzix and then coloured each of the die cuts with Salted Ocean and Picked Raspberry Distress Inks before making them into dimensional blooms and giving them a quick spritz with Biscotti Perfect Pearls Mists, to add a subtle shimmer.
I stamped the gorgeous large butterfly and some of the smaller butterflies from the Insects and Butterflies No.1 stamp plate onto a piece of white card and coloured them with Distress Marker pens, adding "dotty" highlights to the wings of the smaller ones, using a white pen.

I shaped the wings of each of them and added twisted wire for their antennae. I then arranged my dimensional blooms, added some die cut leaves using a die in my stash and the butterflies onto the canvas and finally, attached the Butterfly Words quote using an Idea-ology Memo Pin.

So, that's it from me today! Thank you so much for taking the time to pop by and visit and I can't wait to read all your comments. Don't forget you still have time to enter this month's challenge which is all about Postcards, Travel and Holidays and we'd love you to share all your wonderful creations with us!! All the details of the challenge are HERE.

See you all soon and hope you have a wonderful weekend full of creativity!
